Synopsis:

Why is it so difficult to defend Montevideo's building heritage? Bureaucracy, laziness, disbelief in the value of one's own, lack of legal framework, are just some of the causes of this phenomenon. But also a certain prejudice about that "Europeanizing" architecture, not vernacular, and the understandable need to create something new, because we are America, and America is the future. But it turns out that heritage is just that: something related to the future. There is no future without memory of the road traveled and the material signs of that trajectory are embodied in our cities. Breaking with this chain leaves us orphans about our future, it takes away some of the layers accumulated during the time in which the city was forged and distorts our own image in the mirror, so that in this way it is easier to convince us, while we are distracted by the hustle and bustle of everyday life, that to progress is to live in new apartments and that success depends on the number of amenities offered. The lack of memory, the pressure from the real estate market, and mass tourism are issues affecting cities everywhere. We visited São Paulo, Sofia, and Venice to see that Montevideo is not alone in its contradictions. In Unforgettable Montevideo, a team led by the artist Alfredo Ghierra, tries to answer this and other questions, while paying tribute to his city and inviting numerous actors who collaborate in its construction to reflect on it.
